About Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is a procedure that is performed to reshape or restructure the nose. Patients may choose to undergo rhinoplasty for aesthetic reasons or to correct issues that have arisen from a prior injury or nasal condition. Rhinoplasty can enhance the look and shape of the nose and provide better breathing solutions.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
When undergoing a nose reshaping procedure, incisions are made inside the nasal cavity so there will be no scars visible. During the procedure, the skin, tissues, bone, and cartilage of the nose are reshaped using sculpting techniques to alter the appearance or function of the nose. Depending on the nasal alterations you desire, these techniques may be used:
- Cartilage may be reduced and sculpted to reduce the size of the nose.
- The septum may be trimmed to correct an upturned or downward-pointing nose.
- Reducing the skin from each nostril can provide a more narrow appearance to the base of the nose.
- A shapelier nose can be created by adding tissue in targeted areas.
After nose surgery, a recovery period of three to four weeks is needed. Patients should expect bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose after the procedure, which will diminish after a week or two. Discomfort may be felt but is typically controlled with medication. You may experience some congestion or bleeding for a few days after the surgery is performed. While you can return to light activity a few days after the surgery, you’ll wear a splint to protect the nose for approximately one week.
